About fern-loft
Dedicated to creating broadcast environments that serve storytelling.
Our Story
fern-loft began in 2001 when a group of scenic designers and craftspeople recognised that television studios deserved the same creative attention given to theatre and film productions. Too many broadcast sets were being built as afterthoughts rather than purposeful environments.
We established our workshop in South London with a straightforward goal: design and build television sets that genuinely support the programmes they house. Every decision, from material selection to furniture placement, should serve the viewer's experience.
Over two decades later, our team has grown to include designers, architects, lighting specialists, and skilled craftspeople. We remain independent, allowing us to work across networks and production companies without conflict. Our focus has always been the work itself.
How We Work
Our process balances creative ambition with practical broadcast requirements.
Discovery and Research
We begin by understanding your programme's character. What tone does it convey? Who watches? How do presenters move through the space? We study existing broadcasts, interview production teams, and identify opportunities to strengthen visual storytelling.
Concept Development
Our designers produce multiple directions rather than a single solution. These concepts explore different approaches to space, colour, and form. We present options with clear reasoning, enabling informed decisions rather than gut reactions.
Technical Design
Selected concepts evolve into detailed technical drawings. We coordinate with lighting designers, audio engineers, and camera operators to ensure every element works under broadcast conditions. Problems are solved on paper, not during installation.
Construction and Installation
Our workshop builds scenic elements using materials selected for durability and appearance. Installation teams work efficiently within studio schedules, completing setups during available windows and minimising disruption to ongoing production.

Our Workshop
Located in South London, our 15,000 square foot facility houses design studios, fabrication workshops, and a mock-up stage for testing scenic elements before delivery.
The workshop team includes carpenters, metalworkers, scenic painters, and finishing specialists. Many have worked in television for decades, understanding the particular demands of broadcast environments.
We maintain relationships with specialist suppliers for lighting, video integration, and acoustic materials. This network allows us to source appropriate solutions quickly, regardless of how unusual the requirement.
